Mental Health Risk Rises With Long-Term Air Pollution Exposure

The factors that shape mental health are more varied than most people expect. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that long-term exposure to common air pollutants is associated with increased risks of suicide, whether one attempts to take their own life or just thinks about it.

The team’s discovery doesn’t establish cause, but it adds to a growing assessment within behavioral health. The surrounding environment, including what you breathe, plays a part in your care.

Analyzing Air

Researchers led by Sophie Marie Jones of Queen’s University Belfast reviewed 45 studies published between 2010 and 2024 across Europe, North America, Asia and South America. The wide span hints at the global shortage of mental health providers.

The core result noted how each 10 micrograms per cubic meter increase in long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) correlated with a 53% higher odds of death by suicide. 

Long-term nitrogen dioxide exposure showed a similar pattern, with each 10 parts per billion increase tied to about 32% higher odds. Short-term exposure effects were far smaller. PM2.5 comes from vehicle exhaust, power plants, wildfires and indoor sources like cooking.

A narrative review of 16 additional studies found possible associations with sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and noise pollution. However, those didn’t have statistical significance.

Address Mental & Behavioral Health Together

The researchers propose that air pollution may contribute to chronic inflammation and neurotoxicity. It impairs brain function and reduces stress resilience and mood regulation. Those same areas of the brain also figure heavily among folks with depression and anxiety alongside substance misuse. Furthermore, environmental stressors tend to hit hardest in communities with the fewest treatment resources.

However, there’s no direct cause. “Suicide is a complex issue, and there is no single explanation,” Jones noted.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists agreed. They noted that pollution coincides with poverty, urban living and housing conditions that independently affect mental health. Coordinated teams can treat these issues together.

Evidence-based approaches such as group therapy for emotion dysregulation and medication for any substance misuse remain the standard of care for co-occurring conditions.
