Raleigh Recovery Apartments Will Give Mothers a Home With Their Children
Published October 29, 2026

New recovery housing is coming to Raleigh. Local rehab center, Healing Transitions, has announced that they will be opening a new sober living apartment complex that has a unique family focus.
The complex is designed for moms in recovery, to give them a place to heal while they live with their kids. The apartments are for women who complete the Healing Transitions rehab program.
This new complex will be built on the treatment center campus. The homes will have two or four bedrooms and a large kitchen for families of all sizes.
Recovery Housing for Raleigh Families
The new complex is going to meet a vital need in Raleigh. A study found that there were just 345 recovery residences in North Carolina in 2022. That’s only 3.36 houses per 100,000 residents. It can be even harder for women with kids to find sober living homes where they can live with their children.
Lela Brantley knows the struggle all too well. She qualified for Section 8 housing vouchers twice but each time, they expired before she found an available apartment. She ended up homeless for four years and lost custody of her three children before entering Healing Transitions.
Brantley worked two full-time jobs after she finished the program. The least expensive single bedroom apartments in Raleigh cost about $1,500 a month, making them difficult for families to afford, especially on the heels of addiction recovery.
A Chance to Reconnect with Family
The new Healing Transitions sober living apartments give moms a safe and substance free space to live and recover while they take care of their kids. Having this option can allow families to reconnect and help women in recovery to stay motivated and maintain their sense of purpose for staying sober.
The complex is going to offer community spaces for the adults and play spaces for the kids. The goal is to have places where residents can share a meal or take a yoga class or simply hang out with other moms and kids.
Support in a Central Location
Tracy Freeman-Hines is the organization’s Director of Recovery. She knows from personal experience how hard it is to find a supportive sober home, having struggled with the same challenge after she graduated from treatment in 2013.
She had found a recovery home, but it didn’t allow her to live with her kids, and she had to take three buses to attend her recovery meetings and continuing care.
Parents usually face added pressures in recovery, explains Chris Budnick, Executive Director at Healing Transitions. From attending treatment and recovery meetings to working on rebuilding relationships with their kids, moms in recovery can be pulled in a lot of different directions at once. That stress that can potentially put a mom’s sobriety in jeopardy.
Once construction finishes in 2027 and the Healing Transitions recovery apartments open, this will mitigate a major risk to recovery for many moms. Women and their kids will have a stable and substance-free home they can afford, and they’ll have access to the peer support and the continuing care they need right on the same campus.
