About Abraxas Academy
Located roughly one hour west of Philadelphia is the small rural community of Morgantown, Pennsylvania. This is a close knit community that is home to the Abraxas Academy. Abraxas is a multi service facility and the Abraxas Academy works with male youths aged 14 to 18.
Serving as both a secure residential and secure detention facility, Abraxas specializes in working with male youths who are sexual offenders or have a history of destructive, offending behaviors.
There are three different tracks for treatment here. The track your child will be enrolled in depends on their current struggles, history, and court recommendations if one has been made. The tracks include a three month, six month, and ten month recovery plan.
Within these tracks, educational support is available and your child may be eligible for community service programs where they can earn credits that apply towards their recovery progress.
As an educator, I appreciate that they have a partnership with the Pennsylvania Academic Career and Technical Training Alliance. This can help motivated children find different outlets to channel their emotions and energy in pursuit of a healthier, productive life.
You’ll find that the recovery curriculum is rooted in evidence based practices but there are also opportunities for holistic approaches to care too. For example, the boys here can engage in trades that also serve as therapeutic approaches to care. There’s culinary arts, woodshop, and horticulture. Along with providing the opportunity to learn specialized vocational skills, these classes will also empower your child to focus their efforts on building productive skills that can help guide their future.
Despite being a secure residential and detention facility, this organization is recognized as a national leader in providing youth and families with residential and community-based care.
