Walker County recorded the second-highest accidental drug overdose death rate in Alabama. The rank and death tolls indicate that Alabamans need dual diagnosis treatment more than ever.

Overdose Rates by County

From 2019 to 2024, Bullock County had the highest numbers of overdose deaths in Alabama at 101 deaths per 100,000 residents with 10 deaths in a county of under 10,000 people.

Walker County ranked second with 95.8 accidental overdose deaths per 100,000 residents and 62 deaths. Jefferson County ranked third at 62.3 per 100,000, with 413 total deaths. Winston County ranked fourth at 49.3 per 100,000 with 14 deaths and Calhoun County ranked fifth.

Mental Health Links with Addictions

Opioid addiction rarely occurs by itself. Depression and other mental health conditions frequently appear with substance use. Each condition intensifies the other. This combination, known as co-occurring disorders.

Integrated dual diagnosis treatment addresses all conditions at the same time rather than treating one first. Someone whose overdose risk is driven by opioid use and an untreated mental health condition together can take heart that an integrated approach assists more than any single intervention.

Options at Every Level

Expanded behavioral treatment centers in Alabama offer several levels of care:

  • Residential treatment centers provide 24/7 supervision for folks who need stable environments away from triggers.
  • Outpatient programs let people live at home while attending therapy.
  • Therapies and trauma-focused counseling address thought patterns and past experiences.
