The proceeds from a raffle in Maine went to mental health facilities in Aroostook County to assist rural residents who don’t have resources. The 5th Annual Fall Spectacular was sponsored by the Center for Advancement of Rural Living in Caribou and directed every dollar to services.

The Fall Spectacular

The Center for Advancement of Rural Living was founded in 2011 by Bill Flagg. Money raised at the Fall Spectacular keeps programs running. Those include a volunteer driver program that already logged 25,000+ miles of transportation for older adults in 2025 and a Patient Navigator Program that helps older folks access resources to remain in their homes.

The raffle also supported two addiction recovery homes, one for men and another for women.

Mental Health & Addiction Connection

Recovery homes like CARL matter because addiction goes with other disorders. Many folks with substance use also live with depression, anxiety or trauma-related conditions. This combo is known as co-occurring disorders. When conditions go untreated, each one tends to make the other worse.

That’s why coordinated care is the standard recommendation among behavioral treatment centers. Treating addiction without addressing underlying mental health conditions or vice versa leads to relapse. Rural organizations like CARL offer stable housing and peer connection while residents work toward longer-term treatment.

Rural Access Differs

Aroostook County covers a vast stretch of northern Maine and many towns have no licensed provider nearby. A volunteer driver program and recovery housing makes the difference between entering treatment and giving up right off the bat. Community fundraisers like the Fall Spectacular effectively subsidize the rural health system, one ticket at a time.

Folks in Aroostook County or a similar rural region know the path to care often starts with the type supports CARL provides: safe housing, transportation and help navigating the system. Options include residential treatment centers for people who need 24-hour structure, outpatient programs for those who can stay in their community and behavioral therapy.
