Eli Lilly Adds Psychedelic Mental Health Treatments in $2.8B Deal

Large pharmaceutical companies are moving real money into psychedelic mental health treatment, and the biggest commitment yet was recorded this month. Eli Lilly is acquiring AtaiBeckley and its psychedelic pipeline for $2.8 billion upfront. This is the third recent big-pharma bet on psychedelic agents for mental health disorders and the largest to date.

Lilly’s New Purchase

The transaction was announced July 16 at $6.75 per share in cash, with AtaiBeckley shareholders eligible for up to $1 billion more through contingent value rights tied to development and regulatory milestones. AtaiBeckley formed in November 2025 through the merger of Atai Life Sciences and Beckley Psytech.

Three clinical-stage candidates come with the deal.

The lead program is BPL-003, an intranasally administered formulation of 5-MeO-DMT known as mebufotenin benzoate. It targets treatment-resistant depression, holds Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. BPL-003 recently entered Phase 3 testing after mid-stage results showed a 19.0-point reduction in standardized depression rating scores from baseline after two doses.

The pipeline also includes VLS-01, a DMT buccal film also aimed at treatment-resistant depression, and EMP-01, an (R)-MDMA compound being studied for social anxiety disorder.

This Mechanism is Different

Standard antidepressants largely work by altering the availability of neurotransmitters over weeks of daily dosing. The compounds in this pipeline bind to and activate serotonin receptors. The working theory is that this restores synaptic connections and promotes growth of new neural connections. 

That’s a different premise from an SSRI. The new approach is also delivered in a small number of supervised sessions rather than as a daily pill.

Treatment-resistant depression remains the target because that’s where existing options run out. The term describes depression that persists after multiple adequate treatment trials have failed.

Mental Health and Addiction Connects

Depression research rarely stays in its lane, and this pipeline is a good example of why comprehensive behavioral treatment centers pay attention to the latest development.

Roughly half of people who experience a substance use disorder also experience a mental illness at some point. That’s the definition of a dual diagnosis, in which a mental health condition and a substance use disorder present in the same person at the same time. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder are the most frequent partners to addiction.

Integrated treatment addresses both conditions with one coordinated team rather than sending a patient between separate providers who don’t share a plan. That matters because untreated depression is a well-documented driver of relapse, and continued substance use worsens depressive symptoms.

The Lilly pipeline connects to addiction more directly than the psychedelic assets alone suggest. Lilly is separately developing brenipatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, which has reached late-stage testing for both major depressive disorder and alcohol use disorder. This development marks a reasonable signal about where the field expects integrated pharmacology to go.
