Students at East Elementary in Jefferson City sometimes get support for a hard day from a friend on four legs. Dottie is a therapy dog working in the Jefferson City School District and she’s not alone in how she comforts students.

Dottie is one of 12 therapy dogs in the district. They’re scattered across campuses to provide emotional support during the school day for Missouri students.

Therapy Dogs in Schools

A therapy dog helps students with their emotions and feel safe. A few minutes with a calm dog work in ways that hallway lectures don’t.

Dogs like Dottie are part of a wider effort to integrate mental health in the school day. Twelve dogs reach students in all grade levels regularly rather than just emergencies.

Early Support Matters

Therapy dogs reflect a shift in how schools regard behavioral health. Anxiety, family stress and social pressure show up in class long before a diagnosis. Kids might show behavioral withdrawal or stomachaches that send them to the nurse. Comfort care catches some of that early and reminds kids that asking for help is normal.

It is also true that a therapy dog, however good, is a comfort tool rather than treatment for adults and kids alike, from veterans to inmates. When a child’s distress is persistent or starts interfering with sleep, friendships and schoolwork over weeks and months, that’s when to take action.

Anxiety and Depression in Children

Childhood issues often look different than they do in adults. Kids with anxiety may be clingy, irritable or refuse school. A child with depression may be restless, complain of physical aches or lose interest in activities they used to enjoy. These patterns can affect them in adulthood.

When those patterns persist, professional care makes a difference. That can begin with the child’s pediatrician or a school counselor to decide whether group therapy, an evaluation or a higher level of care is the right next step.

Treatment Options for Students

When symptoms are more severe, residential treatment centers offer 24/7 care and outpatient programs help teens who can still live at home.

Families anywhere in the USA can search our browsable directory to find mental health treatment facilities by city for services that work with children and teens.
