Ohio Resource Fair Connects Community to Mental Health Care

Mental health treatment officials and family wellness groups shared one park in Oak Hill on September 4 for an event built around making help visible. The Jackson County Health Department’s Harm Reduction Team organized the gathering at Central Memorial Park. The turnout impressed organizers despite the sweltering heat and the noted provider shortage afflicting the state.

Ohio has gladly funded a wide range of programs to help folks with mental and behavioral health conditions. At the fair, they turned out en masse. Partners offered info on substance-use recovery, harm reduction, domestic violence support and child wellness. Several attendees gladly shared their own stories of addiction. A moment of silence honored loved ones lost.

All About Resource Fairs

People facing addiction or depression often don’t know what exists in their own county. A resource fair collapses the search into a single afternoon. Instead of cold-calling programs alone, a resident can talk to a real person, pick up materials and leave with a plan.

Jackson County Health Commissioner Kevin Aston thanked the businesses and agencies that donated. The turnout displayed empathy and support for locals who don’t know their options.

Mental Health Ties to Addictions

The mix of vendors reflected how mental health and substance use intertwine. Treatment clinicians and recovery groups stood alongside domestic violence and family advocates for integrated care. Someone with depression and a drinking problem doesn’t lead two separate lives, and the help shouldn’t do the same.

Co-occurring disorders are common and Ohio officials are taking notice of dual diagnoses. Treating one while ignoring the other stalls your recovery.

Mental Health Treatment Facilities Joined the Effort

ADAHM Board Community Program Coordinator Shannon Dalton was one such advocate onsite. She pointed residents toward local options.

A local radio personality broadcast live from the park to give attendees a wider platform to tell their stories of recovery and loss on the air. In a way, it’s group therapy writ large to begin healing across the airwaves.
