About San Diego Lighthouse

Lighthouse’s residential program works alongside the Community Transition Center in San Diego, California, and is part of the San Diego probation department. It provides a path to re-entry for male and female inmates released from state prison and stepping down to post release community supervision (PRCS). Attending this program is a requirement for release for inmates in San Diego County.

You’ll be picked up by CTC staff and taken to the center where you’ll meet with your parole officer. Your parole officer will explain your release conditions and answer any questions. You’ll also meet with a behavioral health team who will do an assessment of your mental health and substance use status. They’ll work with you to get a sense of your goals and needs and create a case plan for you.

A nurse or social worker will help get you set up for Medi-Cal. They’ll make referrals for you at this point for substance abuse treatment, job training, education, medical and dental, felony friendly employers, counseling and housing. I like that all these referrals happen right away as some may take some time to get you seen. This way, everything is in process to best support you.

This process takes up to four hours. If you’re going home, they will give you a drive. If you need short-term structured housing, they can provide that as well. This includes meals, hygiene items, and brand new clothing. You’ll get to live onsite while you wait to be placed in a substance abuse treatment facility or find alternative housing.

Staying at Lighthouse requires following their established programs. There’s anger management, counseling, and life skills classes. There’s also cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to address underlying causes that can fuel an addiction. The Community Transition Center works hard on your behalf so that you don’t feel that you are left to deal with re-entry completely on your own.
