People often move across these lines during treatment, starting residential in one town and stepping down to outpatient or sober living in another. For the bigger pool, San Diego proper is about twenty minutes west.
Getting started in California is more direct than many people expect. One caution on housing: California does not license sober living homes, so ask whether a home is CCAPP-certified before you commit.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) sits roughly 18 miles west of El Cajon, a 20- to 25-minute drive straight out Interstate 8 outside of rush hour. Many residential programs arrange airport pickup for arriving clients, so ask admissions before you book your flight.
On the ground, East County runs on a few main roads: Interstate 8 west to the city, State Route 67 north toward Lakeside and the backcountry, and State Route 125 linking south.
El Cajon is also one of the easier parts of the county for outpatient care without a car, because the El Cajon Transit Center is where the Trolley’s Orange and Green lines end, and the Copper Line connects north to Santee. Programs out in the surrounding hills, though, assume you will drive.
