West Virginia Recovery Homes Add Mental Health Treatment Capacity
Published October 22, 2026

Youth Services System just opened two brand new recovery homes in Center Wheeling. This move doubles down on the weeks after intensive treatment ends when people are sober and motivated but statistically at some of their highest risk of relapse.
The two homes together will house 16 adult men. Combined with Youth Services System’s facilities on Wheeling Island, CEO Jill Eddy notes they now serve 24 residents in West Virginia in its recovery housing network.
Recovery housing works best when residents rebuild the daily grind of life like finding work, attending outpatient appointments and recovery meetings and running errands. Eddy’s emphasis on proximity reflects a growing consensus that meeting basic needs are pieces of the same puzzle.
Mental Health Combines with Addictions
Dual diagnosis means drug use and mental health conditions occur together. Treating both at once produces better outcomes than treating one and waiting on the other. That’s why residential treatment centers and recovery homes increasingly screen for mental health needs at intake.
The state has also invested in expanding care to help those with mental health conditions. Integrated programs at behavioral treatment centers tend to now treat the whole picture rather than just dealing with drugs.
The same goes for the staffers. Nic Cochran is director of recovery homes and noted how the program runs on shared routines. “We have dinner together every night, we have regular programming that they all go through.” All staffers have gone through recovery themselves. “Recovery isn’t something that happens to people. It happens between people.”
