Study Links Spirituality to Lower Cravings in Recovery
Published June 29, 2026

New research adds to a growing case that recovery is about more than managing symptoms, and that the most effective dual diagnosis treatment treats the whole person. A recent study examined the relationship between spirituality and cravings among people in substance use disorder treatment programs. The study used a statistical method to track how the two change together over time.
Rather than taking a single snapshot, the researchers used latent change score modeling. This approach examines how changes in one factor relate to changes in another across time.
The focus on craving matters because craving remains one of the strongest drivers of return to use. Treatment providers have keen interest in anything that reliably reduces cravings.
The Mind, Meaning, and Addiction Connection
In all its forms, spirituality has had a long role in recovery culture, from 12-step programs to faith-based and meaning-centered approaches. Research like this contributes a more rigorous look at whether and how those dimensions track with clinical outcomes such as craving.
This fits a broader principle in behavioral health. Substance use rarely exists in isolation. Using drugs often travels with depression, anxiety, trauma or other mental health conditions. Recovery tends to be stronger when programs address psychological, social, and spiritual needs together rather than treating a single symptom.
Treating a Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders, means having both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Integrated treatment addresses both together because treating only one often leaves the other to undermine recovery. Whole-person models extend that logic and recognize that connection and purpose are essential parts of what keeps people well.
Comprehensive care can take several forms. Residential programs offer structure and around-the-clock support, while outpatient services let folks receive care while living at home. Evidence-based counseling is frequently paired with peer support alongside any appropriate medications for substance abuse. Programs vary in whether and how they incorporate spiritual or meaning-centered components, so it’s worth asking.
Comprehensive Treatment Now
If you or a loved one is navigating addiction alongside a mental health condition, look for inpatient or outpatient facilities and dual diagnosis treatment programs that treat the whole person, not just one diagnosis. Ask whether they offer integrated care for co-occurring disorders and how they support the psychological and social sides of recovery.
