New federal funds will expand addiction treatment in eastern Kentucky. Recovery Rowan County is a nonprofit in Morehead that serves 150 folks a year through recovery, food assistance, transportation and mental health resources. They’ll receive $350,000 per year for three years. It’s a total investment of more than $1 million.

Patient Sabrina Oswald had led “not a life I was proud of” but Recovery made the difference. Now she’s employed as a home and wants to regain custody of her kids. When she heard about the funding, she observed, “The possibilities will be endless” for many more people.

Mental Health Connects to Addictions

Co-occurring disorders complicate treatment because drugs and mental health conditions interact. Addressing one while ignoring the other stalls recovery. That’s why integrated programs work better, particularly during high-risk transitions like reentry from jail.

Recovery Rowan County treats recovery as more than stopping drugs. The nonprofit joins a state initiative to tackle dual diagnoses by providing for basic needs to prevent relapse.

Breaking Down the Funding

The grant brings $350,000 a year for three years. Recovery plans to extend its work into neighboring Bath and Morgan counties with training so those communities can decide whether to launch their own recovery community centers or develop satellite locations.

The funding also restarts a jail-to-community reentry program that ended when previous money ran dry. It’ll reconnect folks with nonviolent offenses to recovery coaching and prepare for employment and daily life after release.

Board chair Gene Detherage pointed to the human element of that work.

“Understand where someone’s at in their journey. Understand the emotional toll of their struggles, but be able to support those and constantly be a representation that success is possible. That is really where the magic happens.”
