California Proposes $50.6M Behavioral Campus in Santa Monica

A provider that has treated addiction on the same stretch of Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica since the 1970s wants to tear down three aging buildings and replace them with a four-story recovery campus. They’ll spend $50.6 million to go a long way to filling the behavioral health gap in southern California.

The proposal for 901 W. Pico Boulevard is backed by a state funding award of more than $50 million announced last year. Urbanize LA’s corroborating account estimates the building at 26,000 square feet and details the clinical mix: 15 detox beds for withdrawal management, 115 residential treatment beds with 75 of them new and 60 outpatient slots to serve 300 people annually.

Continuity is the Whole Point

The campus model focuses on dual diagnoses. Mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, and trauma coincide with substance use disorders more often than not. Traditionally, the standard regional experience is a scavenger hunt: detox in one place, psychiatric care in another and outpatient across town. Every transfer is a place where a patient might give up or relapse.

Keeping withdrawal management and inpatient and outpatient programming under one roof keeps the same provider network responsible from first day to graduation day. People with co-occurring disorders know that continuity is crucial. It prevents gaps from forming that partial treatment so often produces.

Fifty Years on Pico Boulevard

Clare MATRIX has operated a substance use and mental health treatment campus at this address for decades. However, they’ve had to address overcrowding and long waiting lines due to the lack of space and resources. Renovation can change that.

The group most likely to feel that relief includes professionals and executives. Confidential residential care, detox with medical oversight, and evening-compatible outpatient programs make treatment survivable for people with demanding careers, and those resources have been scarce on the Westside.

• Whether this campus or any other makes a shortlist, the evaluation criteria stay constant. 

• Does the program treat co-occurring mental health conditions alongside addiction with medications if need be? 

• Is medical oversight present for withdrawal? How do providers coordinate the transitions between detox and other levels of care?
