Childhood Trauma Linked to Adult Addiction Risk

A recent study found that individuals who experienced multiple traumas as children may be more vulnerable to developing addictions and co-occurring mental health conditions in adulthood.
Each trauma builds on the previous one, compounding mental health and behavioral conditions that may require comprehensive treatment.
Over time, this reinforced link deters these people from overcoming substance abuse and related conditions.
The Connection Between Trauma, Addiction and Mental Health
Study author Giorgio Veneziani, based in Sapienza University of Rome, gathered 802 adult participants in Italy.
Backgrounds included multiple childhood adversities such as abuse, grief and loss, family conflicts, as well as instances of illness or injury, early substance use and exposure to natural disasters.
Of the addictive behaviors, the study accounted for substance and addictive patterns like compulsive gaming, shopping, gambling, overeating, overworking and sex.
Veneziani’s findings show that individuals with two or more traumatic events are more likely to develop addictive behaviors and require dual diagnosis treatment later in life.
His research indicates that these addictions were interconnected.
For example, those with substance abuse issues had higher risk of engaging in co-occurring behavioral patterns like overeating and other compulsive coping mechanisms.
Meanwhile, participants who experienced no significant childhood traumas showed lower rates of dual-diagnosis behaviors.
Why Personalized and Dual Diagnosis Treatment Matters
The results highlight a deeper understanding of addiction that accounts for the ways in which early life experiences can influence the severity and shape of individuals’ addictive behaviors.
Veneziani noted that his study built on previous research on how various adverse childhood experiences can lead to addictive behavior.
But unlike studies that focused on the impacts of singular traumas on addiction later in life, he took a broader approach. “The role of cumulative adverse experiences remains only partially explored,”
As researchers continue to better how childhood trauma influences adulthood addiction, it will help clinicians improve at choosing the appropriate inpatient or outpatient treatments.
A Unique Approach for Everyone
While researchers know that addiction rarely occurs in isolation, this study is hopefully the first of many that examine the deeper relationship between trauma and addiction.
But everyone’s situation is different, especially when addiction and mental health conditions occur together.
We all have unique experiences that have shaped us, and for those impacted by addictions, each journey to healing takes a different path.
