About Talbot House Louisville

Situated in a historic neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, is Talbot House. It’s a sober living home for men who have recently left or are in substance use disorder treatment, who are homeless, or who have been released from incarceration. It aims to provide a stable and substance free shelter so residents can find stability and reclaim their lives.

Talbot House is divided into three residences that clients transition through during their stay. They move from shared rooms to an apartment while demonstrating increased responsibility in different ways, like holding a job. The final home closely mimics fully independent living.

This location doesn’t accept insurance. Instead, clients pay rent. This is a 12 Steps based program.
The Power of Peer Support

An aspect of this program I find interesting is how it utilizes peer support to guide residents in recovery. While this isn’t uncommon in a drug addiction recovery program, it’s unique in that it’s the most senior clients in treatment who offer their support to others. You’re getting help directly from someone who has spent time in the same program as you.

I also like how this gives clients a chance to take on leadership roles when they become peer mentors. Having the chance to support someone else can be a powerful motivator for one’s own sobriety, plus it’s a great way to put what they’ve learned into action.
On Site Meetings

Recovery meetings will play an important part in your stay. In order to make them more accessible to every resident, some meetings are hosted at Talbot House itself. These include general community meetings, too, giving residents a chance to talk openly about concerns around the house.
