Cravings – If you experience intense alcohol cravings as a result of stopping alcohol abuse suddenly, you should attend alcohol withdrawal treatment. Cravings are part of the syndrome known as alcoholism which is marked by an individual’s dependence on alcohol. According to the NIDA, behavioral treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy help patients with “developing strategies for coping with cravings and avoiding those high-risk situations.” This treatment will usually be available in alcohol withdrawal treatment and will also prepare you for addiction treatment which should naturally follow.

Hallucinations – Hallucinations during alcohol withdrawal are signs of delirium tremens, a “severe form” of withdrawal from alcohol which can be deadly if the person is not properly cared for (NLM). Hallucinations can lead to individuals doing dangerous things, not realizing what is happening around them. In alcohol withdrawal treatment, individuals in this situation can be monitored and kept from the dangers that hallucinations can often cause like self-harm or the harming of others. If you see, hear, or physically feel things that are not actually there, you should attend alcohol withdrawal treatment right away as you could truly be in danger.

Seizures – Physically, seizures as a result of alcohol abuse can be very dangerous, especially if you have never experienced them before. Many people do not know how to properly care for an individual going through a seizure, so this is why alcohol withdrawal treatment can be more effective and safer.

Though seizures are not necessarily deadly an individual experiencing them as a result of alcohol withdrawal should monitored and cared for correctly or there could be dire consequences. Seizures are another sign of delirium tremens in those with severe withdrawal syndromes which makes them a very important sign that you need formal withdrawal treatment.

Confusion – Not knowing what is going on around you or why you feel the way you do is common during this time, but it can also be very frustrating and even border on dangerous. Severe confusion is a result of delirium tremens and someone going through it will be understandably afraid. In a formal withdrawal treatment facility, the person can receive both behavioral treatment and medication for their confusion and, ideally, be able to more calmly work through their issues and dependencies with alcohol.

Tremors – Tremors are another physical sign of delirium tremens, but they can occur in a less severe way if the individual is merely experiencing a more mild case of withdrawal from alcohol. These tremors are a sign, though, that the person has a withdrawal syndrome that affects both the mind and the body, making the individual’s withdrawal syndrome one that should raise concern.

Tremors are not dangerous but they can be indicative of other dangers that the individual is currently dealing with. If you become so shaky that you cannot hold a pen and write, eat, or take part in other everyday activities, then withdrawal treatment is especially beneficial to you.

If you experience any of these issues, do not wait to seek alcohol withdrawal treatment. It may be very beneficial and could even save your relapse or your life, depending on the severity of your dependence.
