Do Affordable Drug Rehab Centers Really Exist?

Affordable drug rehab centers really do exist and can be found all over the country. According to SAMHSA, most rehab centers provide some kind of payment assistance, whether they work on a sliding fee scale or are free to patients. This means that, even though they can be difficult to find, affordable drug rehab centers are worth searching for.

How Many Affordable Rehab Centers are There?

The free, partial-free, and sliding fee scale rehab centers all fall under the category of affordable rehab. Some are inpatient based and others are outpatient, but there are many facilities which offer “some type of payment assistance” which makes them more affordable than private centers.

According to SAMHSA, 4.0% of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States are all free while 23.7% are not free at all and have no sliding fee scale. That means that the majority of rehab centers both inpatient and outpatient based (72.3%) provide some type of payment assistance without being completely free.

Not only do these centers exist, but most in the country do fall under this category. It is particularly beneficial that patients who need financial assistance find and attend these rehab centers.

Why Should I Seek Out an Affordable Drug Rehab Center?

Even though affordable centers are (by and large) the majority, partially free centers with a sliding fee scale make up 37.8% of the facilities available. It is important to note that this category, one of the most beneficial types of affordable drug rehab centers (besides those that are completely free), exist in large numbers but do usually have stipulations on which patients are accepted. They can also be difficult at times to find.

Despite these issues, patients should still seek out affordable treatment whenever necessary. Some of the reasons a patient should seek an affordable drug rehab center are:

  • Financial hardship often occurs when someone becomes addicted to drugs. According to the NIDA, drug addiction is “linked to homelessness, crime, and violence,” all of which can also negatively affect a person’s financial situation among many other issues. That said, it may not be beneficial for someone in this situation to stay at or attend an expensive treatment facility.
  • Many more expensive facilities provide the same basic treatments as affordable facilities while also providing other treatments which are not always necessary. Nearly any treatment facility will provide medication, group and individual therapy, counseling, and other basic and proven treatments, but many individuals who attend expensive facilities wind up paying for extra treatments that are often nonessential.
  • Patients can save the extra money and use it toward setting up a better situation for after treatment.

How Do I Find These Facilities?

Looking for rehab centers at least partially based on affordability is perfectly acceptable, and many Internet databases will give you a concept of whether or not payment assistance is an option for a particular center. Asking at free clinics, community outreach programs, or mutual-help group meetings (like Narcotics Anonymous) about affordable facilities is also a good way to find them. Just remember that these treatment centers do exist, and you should not have to settle for a more expensive facility, especially if you do not feel you can afford it.
