Insight Northwest Recovery, a dual diagnosis treatment center for teens offering mental health and addiction services across Oregon, has announced plans to open a new location in Salem. The new mental health treatment facility in Salem will offer outpatient and telehealth services for teens ages 12 and over.
Comprehensive Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Teens
Insight’s first location opened in Eugene last year. The center will accept the Oregon Health Plan, as well as most major commercial insurance providers. The clinic’s flexible model makes it a valuable addition to treatment centers that accept Medicaid and major insurance plans.
Insight Northwest Recovery is the only center in Oregon to offer integrated dual diagnosis treatment for adolescents, where youth can receive mental health and addiction care at the same time.
Josh Gotlib, the founder of the program, says, “It’s really important to treat both because if we’re only treating addiction or we’re only treating mental health, we’re not looking at the full picture of what’s going on with the individual.”
This expansion helps address the lack of behavioral treatment centers in the region.
A Flexible Treatment Model
There’s also a scarcity of options for those who hope to stay in school while receiving treatment. The Salem-Keizer School District’s director of mental health Chris Moore says team discussions are currently underway to bring Insight’s unique services into area high schools.
He stated that he is “very excited about their robust, flexible and highly responsive treatment model.”
The model consists of age-grouped therapy sessions with some focusing on substance abuse and others addressing mental health issues, such as depression and suicide. Specific groups are tailored to meet the needs of individuals struggling with both mental health and addiction.
After an initial assessment, patients will begin either four intensive weeks of day treatment, 20 hours weekly of group therapy or 10 hours per week of outpatient treatment for three months.
Gotlib says it’s the kind of treatment he could have benefited from himself as a teen. In his words, “I really had to claw my way through the system . . . And also, I’ve had friends that I’ve lost to suicide or overdose that could have really benefited from a program like this.”
True Trauma Healing Work
Gotlib believes wider access to Insight’s dual diagnosis programming could help significantly reduce rates of teen suicide, overdoses and high school drop outs. He stresses the lack of resources in communities like Salem, where the need is greater than in towns like Bend or Portland.
According to Gotlib, the program takes a harm reduction rather than an abstinence based approach, saying, “The goal of this level of care is stabilization. Most people are coming in, they’re suicidal, so those (symptoms) have subsided, dramatically . . . and they’re in a place stability-wise, where they can go in and engage in individual counseling and do true trauma healing work.”
