Who Needs Drug Addiction Rehabilitation?

Research shows that many addicts believe they can stop using drugs on their own but, after repeated attempts to do so, they are unsuccessful. Long term abuse of drugs changes the way our brains work and after a while, a tolerance to the drugs leads to a dependency where normal activities in life cannot be accomplished without their use.

The addict eventually needs more of the drugs to produce the same desired effect or to “get well” and they begin to compulsively seek drugs despite the negative consequences this may cause. This is addiction and it is not to be thought of as a flaw in one’s character but, rather as a disease. Like other disease treatments, drug rehab treatment is necessary to help the addict to heal.

Understanding Drug Abuse

Drug abuse can involve a myriad of circumstances where the abuser uses the drugs for which they were not intended to be used, or they use them more frequently or in higher dosages. Like addiction, anyone who abuses drugs risks the possibility of complication in their health, their family, social, or work environments, or worse, overdose or addiction. Getting the abuse under control is another intended goal of addiction recovery centers.

Recognizing Drug Abuse and Addiction

In most cases, you can recognize drug abuse or drug addiction because of the changes in behavior your loved one exhibits. They may use the drugs continuously or they may be unable to function in work, society, or family gatherings without using drugs. They may lie, steal, commit crimes, or exhibit irrational behaviors. They may, also, try to convince you that their abuse of drugs is necessary for a medical or psychological purpose.

Recognizing abuse issues is tricky. Drug users will often hide their abuse. They tend to avoid getting noticed by withdrawing from people or avoiding events where their abuse is not accepted. Instead, they hang around other abusers who are actively engaging in the abuse.

Helping Addict’s Seek help

Family and friends can play a critical role in motivating individuals with drug problems to enter and stay in a drug rehab treatment. Being involved in the therapy can be significantly, important, especially for adolescents. It helps strengthen and extend the benefits that drug abuse rehab facility provides, while helping you and the family to cope with your loved one’s drug problems in a more productive way.

If your loved one presents signs of drug addiction or drug abuse, drug abuse rehab centers can help. You can find help through community resources, on line, or through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
